Why Does My Cat Knead?

You may have noticed your cat making a kneading or ‘treading’ motion on surfaces she intends to settle on. Or she may be lying in your lap and start to knead your legs. Have you ever wondered why she does this?
A cat kneads by extending the claws on her front paws, and alternatively digs them in and out of the surface in a rhythmic motion. This is also known as ‘treading’ or ‘making biscuits’, and originates in your cat’s kitten hood.
When a kitten is sucking from her mother’s teat, she will automatically knead the skin around the teat. This stimulates the flow of milk. Cats bring this behavior with them to adulthood, and it is thought that they will knead when they feel happy, comfortable and safe. The action could also serve as a source of comfort for her, much the same as a child may continue to suck their thumb well into their teenage years.
It is also possible that your cat sees you as a mother figure, and it is thought that kneading is one way in which your cat can express her affection for you and create a bond between you. Look for other ways she may show her affection;
She may lick you- this is her way of grooming you. Cats will groom one another as a sign of affection.
If she rubs her face, body or tail around you, she is leaving a scent on you. This is her way of claiming ‘ownership’ of you.
If she comes to greet you with her tail held high, maybe just bending over slightly at the tip, this shows that she trusts you. Cats will carry their tail low if they are unsure or feeling mistrustful. If she rolls onto her back as you approach, she really trusts you. A cat’s belly is very vulnerable to attack so she will only expose it if she feels completely safe.
