Before bringing home your new kitten, there are various things to take into account. First, make sure you have all the essential equipment she will need. Having these in place will help her to settle in and feel that your home is hers.
Food; your kitten’s breeder should be able to tell you which food she is used to, or you could consult your veterinary surgeon. She will need food suitable for a kitten, as this contains more nutrients than adult cat food, and any changes made to her food should be done gradually.
A litter tray; this should be easily accessible for her, and in a quiet area. Make sure she knows where it is, and use litter she is used to if you can.
A scratching post would also be useful, as if she gets used to this from an early age it may save your furniture!
Toys are a must, as play time is essential for your new kitten. This is how she hones her hunting skills, plus gives you an opportunity to bond with her. A regular playtime will help her to develop a routine and get rid of surplus energy.
You will also need to spend some time making sure your home is safe for your new arrival;
Move breakable items out of reach. Kittens are naturally very playful and will not be able to differentiate between a toy and your favorite ornament. Remember that cats can climb and jump, so you will need to be extra sure that precious items are really ‘out of reach’.
Cats are very inquisitive and will like to explore; check to see if there are any small spaces she could crawl into and become trapped, such as behind kitchen appliances. These could be blocked off. Never underestimate her ability to squeeze through the smallest of gaps!
Kittens may be tempted to chew electrical cables or phone cords. This can be prevented by spraying them with a deterrent, or citrus spray. Cover the cables in heavy duty tape for added security. Remove any household plants which may be poisonous as your kitten may be tempted to chew them. Make sure that she cannot access any household cleaning fluids etc which may also be poisonous.
